You Can Breastfeed Your Adopted Baby!
Breastfeeding your adopted baby has many special benefits for you and your baby!
This is true whether you have had time to induce lactation or not!
If you like, you can begin to induce lactation by pumping your breasts using a breast pump. Some moms also use hormones and /or herbs to stimulate lactation. Working with an IBCLC will help you make the right decision and plan for you.
Since a baby’s natural instincts to breastfeed are strongest right after birth it is ideal if you can be with your baby as soon as possible after birth. But if that is not an option for you, studies show that skin to skin time encourages breastfeeding. And an IBCLC can help you learn to use a supplementer at the breast to help increase your baby’s interest in breastfeeding.
Most moms enjoy the skin to skin time and their breastfeeding experience with their adopted baby. It is difficult to know how much milk you will produce but this is more than just making milk. It is a precious relationship and bond.
An IBCLC can assist you in this experience, assisting you anytime during the process. If possible it is best if she works with you before you even welcome your baby into your home. She will do a physical exam and assessment and discuss all of your options. Together you design your individualized plan.
Basking Babies can provide you with support every step of the way!
If you are planning to adopt and are interested in breastfeeding it's never too early to make a plan!
